Best Metal Bands of All Time

Metal music: a sub-genre of rock music defined by heavy guitars and normally a deep voiced singer, sometimes a screaming one. Let’s take a look at some of the best metal bands of all time.

Black Sabbath

It only seems right to start off with the band that many call the godfathers of metal, Black Sabbath. Formed in Birmingham, UK, in 1968, they made doom and gloom cool. They have created some of the most famous metal songs ever, such as “Paranoid” and “War Pigs.” Playing supposedly their last ever concerts earlier this year, lead singer Ozzy Osborne is a massive celebrity in his own right.

The most successful metal band of all time, and many would say, the best. Formed in Los Angeles in 1981, they have sold over 100 million albums worldwide. Metallica have transcended music like no other metal band, and have a wide legion of fans that no other metal band can rival. This has much to do with their varying music styles, from the thrash metal of their debut 1983 “Kill’Em All”, to the stadium rock of their massive selling 1991 eponymous album, Metallica have got something to please most metal fans out there.

Iron Maiden

Whilst their old school style may not be for everyone, noone can deny Iron Maiden their enduring success. Formed in London in 1975, they take a lot of their musical inspiration from bands of the time. For many people, they are best known for their mascot Eddie, who even after hese all years still appears at their live shows, and on their album covers.

Pantera is a band who can undoubtedly lay claim to having the heaviest ever U.S. number 1 album (1994s “Far Beyond Driven”). Despite starting off as a glam metal band in the early 80s, they changed to a much heavier groove (and their singer) in the late 80s and this is when they started finding success. Unfortunately band squabbles got the better of them and they went on a extended hiatus in 2001. Whilst many bands of their time have since reformed, unfortunately this will never happen as lead guitarist Dimebag Darrell was murdered onstage in 2004 by a deranged fan, whilst playing with the band Damageplan.

This is just four of the best metal bands of all time. There are so many more great metal bands out there – AC/DC, Slipknot, Motorhead, Guns N’Roses to name but a few. It’s a sub-genre of rock that is continuing to evolve today, and is showing no sign of slowing down. Rock on you metalheads!
